The GSoC organizations list is not one permanent roster. Google selects mentoring organizations for each annual program, and communities can join, return after a gap, change names or stop participating. The right way to use a historical list is to discover patterns, then verify current acceptance and contribution instructions on official sources.
Our interactive organization explorer combines organization records from 2016 onward. For the original analysis in this article, we use finalized 2016–2025 project snapshots and exclude incomplete 2026 project totals. The result is a research dataset, not an official Google ranking.
GSoC organization list by year
The annual list has ranged from 168 to 212 organizations in our 2016–2025 snapshots. Project counts also move independently of organization counts, so “more organizations” does not automatically mean more projects per organization.

These counts come from locally generated snapshots and may differ from another source because of name normalization, merged organizations, late program changes or different definitions. Reproducible analysis should always state its window and transformation rules.
What ten years of GSoC org data reveals
Ten years of data reveals a broad participation spectrum. Across 504 normalized slugs in this window, 158 appear once, 88 appear twice, 258 appear in at least three years, and 165 appear in at least five.

The 43 all-window organizations demonstrate continuity under our normalized names. That can imply experience producing ideas, onboarding contributors and scoping projects. It cannot tell you whether the current maintainers have time, whether a suitable mentor exists, or whether the organization will be accepted in 2027.
Recent continuity is often more relevant than lifetime totals. Our snapshot shows 114 organizations appearing in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025. Of the 185 organizations listed in 2025, 154 also appeared in 2024—about 83.2%. The remaining set includes first-time participants and returning organizations with gaps.
How to search the GSoC organizations list effectively
Start with a broad match, then filter on recent evidence and contribution feasibility. Searching only for a language produces too many weak matches; searching only for famous names can produce intense competition and poor personal fit.
Use this sequence:
- Select two or three technologies you can already use in a real codebase.
- Add a domain you care about, such as developer tools, science, accessibility, security or education.
- Prefer organizations with recent relevant projects, not merely a historical tag.
- Inspect the organization's latest GSoC page, contribution guide and repository.
- Check whether beginner issues are maintained rather than simply labelled.
- Compare response quality and onboarding clarity across three to five candidates.
- Narrow only after you have built or investigated the actual software.
Browse GSoC organizations by technology, topic or year. Then use the official program page to confirm the current roster. Google's organization-selection guide also recommends matching communities to your interests and skills before researching them in depth.
How to read an organization profile
An organization profile should answer what the community works on, what it used recently, how often it has mentored projects and where a contributor should go next. Read each field as evidence with limitations.

The organization website and repository are more current than a third-party profile. Report stale links and verify rules before acting.
A better shortlist than “top GSoC orgs”
There is no universal top-ten list for contributors because fit depends on skills, interests, time and community expectations. A defensible shortlist records evidence instead of assigning unexplained scores.

This avoids two common mistakes: choosing the organization with the most projects as if it offered the best odds, and choosing a first-time organization as if it guaranteed lower competition. Neither follows from the data.
How organization names complicate historical analysis
Names are not stable identifiers. A community can rename, join an umbrella foundation, split into projects or use different punctuation across years. A naive count can therefore create duplicates or erase meaningful distinctions.
Our current analysis uses the normalized slugs in the repository. Treat 504 as a dataset count, not an eternal number of distinct legal organizations. Future methodology improvements should retain raw names, source URLs, per-year identifiers and explicit alias/merge decisions so a reader can audit every transformation.
Technology labels have a similar problem. postgres and postgresql, or reactnative and react native, may describe the same ecosystem. Until canonicalization is complete, verify the raw organization record and recent project pages rather than treating every filter count as exact.
Official list versus independent explorer
The official GSoC program site is authoritative for accepted organizations, projects and applications. An independent explorer is valuable for questions the annual roster does not answer easily: How often has a community appeared? What did it mentor before? Which technologies recur? Which other organizations work in a related domain?
Use both:
- Official site for eligibility, accepted status, dates, current ideas and application actions.
- Historical explorer for discovery, comparison and year-over-year context.
- Organization-controlled sites for contribution instructions, code, community rules and AI policy.

A valuable GSoC org list reduces research time without replacing research. Use the data to ask better questions, then earn confidence by interacting with the actual community.
